WELCOME TO THE CLASSICAL SCHOOL
OF THE FIRST ACADEMY

Thank you for visiting our site.

The Classical School is a division of the The First Academy, a well respected conventional Christian school that has been serving Orlando since 1987. Both schools are ministries of First Baptist Church Orlando and are housed on its campus.

The Classical School, founded in 2000, is a program designed for home school families and offers classes from kindergarten through grade 12. It offers both enrichment activities and academic classes that center on critical thinking skills within a Christian context. Athletic opportunities are available in most sports through The First Academy's extensive program.

Intended for parents who want their child to experience the benefits of some on campus classes, TCS uses a classical approach to education. Although traditional curricula are still used in the classroom, teaching methods are structured along classical lines in order to mesh with a child's natural learning strengths during three stages of development. The Grammar Stage, grades K-4, takes advantage of the child's natural ability to memorize. The Logic Stage, grades 5-8, focuses on the student's desire to question and understand connections. The Rhetoric Stage, grades 9-12, encourages students to speak and write persuasively.

The Classical School offers five programs from which parents may choose:

  • Grades K-8
K - 2 students attend Tuesdays and Thursdays, and kindergarten has the option of attending half day. Each day has a different course offering, and parents may use an additional curriculum at home. Students in grades 3-8 are expected to follow through with the materials covered and assignments made by the classroom teacher during the Tuesday and Thursday classes.

  • Grades 9-12
Students attend Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the core subjects are taught both days. The classroom teacher provides assignments for the student to complete at home on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

  • Basic
These students do not attend any on-campus classes. Instead, they are registered with The Classical School and participate in its recordkeeping, field trips, standardized testing, consulting, and library resources.

  • Wednesday Enrichment
For TCS students in K-2, or Basic and non-TCS students in K-6. A relaxed, hands-on approach to exploring the seven continents. It supplements any curriculum used at home and does not require any assignments to complete.

  • First Hope
This is a five-day program for children who have learning challenges. More information is available at First Hope's web site
