I will continue to encourage each learner to finish with excellence and to embrace a sense of pride in their academic accomplishments.

Science Dupont Challenge
In January the 8th grade students entered the Dupont Challenge essay competition and wrote essays on 3 different world problems (Hunger, Energy Supply and Protection), and how with the use of science they could help solve one of these major issues facing our world today. The challenge received over 9,000 entries into the competition and the entries were judged by Dupont officials, and the winners were announced recently.
For the third year in a row The First Academy has had students place in the top 20 for this competition!

Congratulations to our top 20 honorable mention winners this year Spencer Williams with his essay on “Health Bit” a medical bracelet to help monitor heart changes, and Lily Baker with her essay “Purifying the World” with her invention of a straw that purifies drinking water.

Standardized Assessment
The spring standardized assessment: ERB-CTP 4 (7th)/Terra Nova (8th) is next week. While your child cannot “study” for these tests, you can make certain preparations to help your student do his or her very best.

If you haven’t already, please mark your calendars for the following test dates:

Middle School: April 27th , 28th, 29th and 30th
Achievement Test: ERB-CTP 4 (7th) Terra Nova (8th)
Cognitive Assessment: (7th-8th)

We understand that illness and other circumstances may arise. Please schedule all trips and appointments around these dates. No make-ups will be scheduled.

The scores from the standardized assessments do not impact report card grades; yet they will be utilized in making data-driven decisions. Eligibility to participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program (T.I.P.) is based on the scores of specific subtests on the standardized assessments. The cognitive and achievement scores are used in the evaluation process that determines 7th-8th grade honors course placement. Additionally, the assessment data is analyzed in the evaluation of the curriculum and instructional design.

For specific questions regarding the assessments please contact the Curriculum/Schedule Specialist- Lisa Bacon or the Administrative Assistant- Ruth Anne Davis at (407)206-8651.

Camp Orlando – June 5th-9th Southeastern University
Camp Orlando is the First Orlando Student Ministry’s annual summer camp. This year, Middle School and Upper School will be together for Camp Orlando, though most activities will take place separately. Camp Orlando 2015 will feature Stuart Hall (camp speaker), Unhindered (camp worship band) and A.C. Sanford (camp emcee). The theme for Camp Orlando 2015 is UNITED: though each of us is uniquely different, we are UNITED in grace and mission. This will be a week that students will not want to miss!
