Remembrance Stones

Written by Dr. Whitaker, Head of School

More than twenty-seven years ago, a group of visionary men and women began a journey to establish an outstanding school that would be distinctively Christian and decidedly academic. Their work was supported by the passion and generosity of two incredible men – Dr. Jim Henry, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church/Orlando, and Tom Gurney, legendary Orlando attorney.

In the fall of 1987, an eager and energetic student body assembled under the direction of founding Headmaster Fred Chase for the very first day of school. They parked in the Lower School lot and walked across the current drop off areas where the safety patrols now stand each morning. These talented teachers, superb students, and proud parents prayed for God’s blessing and launched The First Academy on a voyage that continues to this day.

In honor of those who paved the way for us today, we installed the Founders Walk in front of the Lower School.

I invite you to stop and take a look at the brick pavers – there is an engraved stone for every student and employee who attended the inaugural day at The First Academy in 1987. The Bible tells us to give honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7) and to set stones as a reminder of the faithfulness of God (Joshua 4) in our lives. Take time to thank God for those who planted a seed that grew the tree that now provides shade for your children and mine.

Joyfully Serving Your Family,
