Why Government? – A Devotional from PJ Wehry

As Americans, we can easily take for granted the good that government brings us. After all with baseball suffering from scandal, the only reliable national pastime is grumbling about our government. However, we must keep in mind these words from Paul, “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” At first, this seems hard to swallow, but Paul reminds us why we have government in the first place. “They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong.” While our government is not perfect, if we look across at unstable nations, the need for the authority that bears the sword becomes clear. Elections often bring out the worst in politics. If our frustration grows, let’s take a moment and remember the good that our government does bring.
