A Father’s Protective Instinct

Written by Mr. Patrick Barrett, Executive Director for Spiritual Formation & Missions

I’m not a particularly strong man, but if King Kong stood between me and my children I’m fairly confident he would lose a finger before it was all over. Believe me, the protective instinct that dads experience far surpasses the strength of our arms. Big guerillas, dinosaurs, closet monsters, whatever – they are no match for a father’s protective instinct. So let’s apply this beyond the physical safety of our children. To what lengths will we go for their souls? How strong are our spiritual instincts?

One of the most sobering things that I’ve ever considered is the truth that I passed down a sinful nature to my children. I did it. My son, Samuel, will be a sinner just like his father and just like his grandfather before me – all the way back to Adam. I am absolutely helpless to protect him from this fate. No instinct and no muscle can stop it from happening. Dads, our children received something from us that is worse than the most catastrophic disease. We gave our children a sinful nature, and the very person charged to protect has delivered the greatest injury. But in the Lord’s infinite wisdom and grace, He desires fathers to be the primary instrument that He uses to redeem your children. Incredible!

In a very special upcoming Parent University breakfast event for dads, Victor Flores, the Student Discipleship Pastor at First Baptist Orlando, will lead a workshop entitled, “Life Conversations That Lead to Life Transformation: Passing Down Faith To Your Children.” Victor’s message to fathers is rooted in Deuteronomy 6:4-7, which urges parents to stoke the fires of faith in their children. Fathers, you don’t want to miss this important time as we glean from Victor’s 30+ years in student ministry and his incredible experience from the bumps and bruises of raising three children.
