RECOGNITION

During US chapel, sophomore Gracyn DenBesten shared her story of God’s provision during a life and death situation. In fourth grade, Gracyn was diagnosed with viral myocarditis. The diagnosis carried a startling reality: Gracyn needed a heart transplant in order to survive. “You don’t realize that Jesus is all we need until Jesus is all you’ve got,” Gracyn discovered. It was during this time that God continually showed up in small yet powerful ways to keep Gracyn alive. Gracyn knew that God had a plan for her life and took comfort in this verse: “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). After over 4 months of waiting, God provided a bittersweet gift: a new heart. Following her heart transplant, Gracyn faced the reality of survivor’s guilt, knowing someone else died in order for her to live. Gracyn’s story is a tangible picture of our new life as a result of Jesus’ death. We are thankful for God’s work in her life and how she has used her pain to speak truth into others.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:1-3)
