Artistic Foundations
Lower School Arts at The First Academy offers a meaningful exploration of God’s gifts of Music and Visual Art. Kindergarten through 5th grade students receive 45 minutes of Music and Art instruction per week. K-Prep 4 students receive 30 minutes of instruction per week. These programs serve as a starting point for discovering students’ talents and provide a foundation for continuing in the Middle and Upper School Fine Arts Program.
In music education, students learn by participating in activities such as singing, playing instruments, and moving. This hands-on approach provides the foundational skills they need for a comprehensive and sequential music education program. With these learned skills, our students are prepared to further their studies in instrumental and vocal music programs. All Lower School students take part in the annual Christmas Program, which is live-streamed online each December.
In art education, students learn to communicate ideas through art and draw inspiration from God’s creation. They are exposed to art history and the basics of studio arts. Students are encouraged to create their own unique works of art using a variety of materials and techniques.
Music and art skills can be enhanced by participation in The Academies, an after-school program offering a wide range of activities, including visual and performing arts.
The Royal Choir is an extracurricular class offered to 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students. Students learn to develop their vocal skills to sing alone and with a group. They are taught to read music and sing with expression and technical accuracy. At performance venues, students showcase a wonderful variety of vocal literature, representing different genres and cultures. The Lower School presents a musical production and a visual arts show each spring. The musical is offered to 4th and 5th-grade students and is an extracurricular activity. Students have a whole theater experience including custom costumes, lighting, and sound. The directors are committed to helping the student actors hone their gifts and talents. We want to facilitate an environment of healthy self-confidence, well-developed performance skills, and a strong work ethic. Every Lower School student will have one or more pieces of artwork displayed in a visual arts show to be viewed during the theatrical performance dates.
