Senior Spotlight: Jennifer Hou

At what grade level did you start at The First Academy?

I started attending TFA in 10th grade.

What were the reasons you or your parents chose The First Academy?

I’m from China where Christian schools barely exist. My parents wanted me to receive a Christian education. They found out about TFA and believed it would give me a strong academic background from a Christian perspective.

Are you involved in extracurricular activities? If so, what are they and have you received awards in these activities? (These can be affiliated with TFA or outside of school)

I’m Athanasius House Chaplain. I’ve been involved in Theatre and Chorus since 10th-grade. I also volunteer for child care at church on a weekly basis.

Which colleges have you applied to and which ones have you be accepted to thus far? (Please include if you have made a decision to attend a certain college next year)

So far, I have applied to Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, University of Miami, University of California Berkeley, and University of California Los Angeles.

What do you plan to study in college and what are your long-term career goals?

I plan to major in anthropology for undergraduate to build a strong foundation, and I plan to do my MBA for graduate school. I want to do something with international business in the future.

Have you received any college scholarships? If so, which ones? (Or, which ones are your currently nominated for)

I have not received any college scholarships so far.

Who is/are your favorite TFA teacher(s), and why? (Teachers can be K4-12)

I would say Mr. Harrison, Mr. Kowars, and Ms. Pierre-Louis are my favorite TFA teachers. They have not only prepared me for college in academically, but also mentally. They are my life guides, and show me so much love. When I have some issues going on, they always spare some time for me, encourage me, and share their personal experiences with me.

How has TFA made a difference in, or impacted your life?

TFA has given me the opportunity to know the best teachers who actually care about me from the bottom of their hearts. I’ve benefited so much from my close relationship with many of my teachers.

How do you feel that The First Academy has prepared you for life after graduation?

TFA has given me a great Christian education through which I feel well prepared for college. Beyond the school lessons, TFA has helped me establish the basic Christian moral view. I’ve grown mentally, and developed skills that are important for my future life.

What does it mean to you to be a The First Academy alumni?

Being a TFA alumni gives me the opportunity to continue my relationship with those great teachers and intelligent peers. I will have to come back and visit the teachers. I’m also looking forward to what the class of 2018 will do!
